Licensing & the law
How do I check a rubbish removal company is licensed?
Ask for their Environment Agency waste carrier licence number and check it on the EA's public register, confirming it is current and upper tier. It takes under a minute.
What is my duty of care as a householder?
You must hand waste only to an authorised carrier. If your rubbish is fly-tipped and traced back to you, you can be fined up to £400 or prosecuted, whoever dumped it. The licence check plus a written quote is your proof.
What is a waste transfer note?
A short document recording what was taken, by whom and where it is going. Legally required for business waste (keep it two years), and good evidence for householders on clearances and renovation waste.
Do I need a permit?
Not for van collections or wait-and-load, because nothing is left on the road. Skips on public roads need a council permit of roughly £30 to £60.
The collection itself
Do I have to carry things to the kerb?
No. Collection is from inside the property or garden: the team does the lifting, carrying and sweep-up, stairs included.
How fast can rubbish be collected?
Typically within days, and often faster where routes allow. Mention any deadline, a delivery date or tenancy handover, on the form.
Can you take fridges, mattresses and TVs?
Yes. They carry disposal surcharges because of how they must be processed, and the surcharge is included in the quoted price rather than added on the day.
What about asbestos or chemicals?
Never in a general load. Asbestos needs a licensed specialist contractor, and chemicals and paint need hazardous waste disposal. Say what you have on the form and you will be pointed the right way.
After the collection
Where does the waste actually go?
To licensed transfer stations, where it is sorted: recyclables recovered, reusable items diverted where practical, green waste composted, and the remainder disposed of legally.
Can I get proof of legal disposal?
Yes. Ask for a waste transfer note, and keep it with the quote and your licence check. For business waste it is a legal requirement to hold for two years.
Do you sweep up afterwards?
Yes. The area is left swept and tidy as part of the job, inside and out.
